Let’s celebrate (or anti-celebrate) el Día de San Valentin with Valentine’s Day activities for Spanish class! It’s that time of year again when love is in the air, and even our Spanish classrooms can’t escape the Cupid’s arrow. But fear not, fellow teachers, because Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about cheesy cards and sugary treats. We can leverage this festive occasion to create engaging and culturally rich learning experiences for our students.

So, ditch the Cupid and let’s dive into some fun and effective ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day in your Spanish class!
1. Love is in the Air (and in the Lyrics):
Music is a universal language, and love songs are a staple in any culture. Introduce your students to some classic Spanish love songs or explore contemporary hits that express different facets of love and relationships. Analyze the lyrics, discuss the cultural nuances, and even have a karaoke session where students can belt out their favorite tunes.
2. ¡Correos del Corazón! (Love Letters):
Challenge your students to write heartfelt love letters in Spanish. They can write to a real-life crush, a fictional character, or even an inanimate object they adore (a taco, perhaps?). This activity not only practices writing skills but also allows students to express their creativity and explore different registers of language.
To help your students with this activity, I’ve created a free Valentine’s Day Spanish Writing Activity that you can download from my Teachers Pay Teachers store. This resource includes a picture-based vocabulary box to help students express their feelings in Spanish, as well as templates for writing different types of love letters.

3. ¡Dichos de Amor! (Love Proverbs):
Proverbs offer a window into a culture’s values and beliefs. Introduce your students to some Spanish love proverbs and have them discuss their meanings and cultural significance. This can lead to fascinating conversations about different perspectives on love, relationships, and even heartbreak.
4. ¡Adivina Quién! (Guess Who?):
Play a Valentine’s Day-themed “Guess Who?” game where students describe a mystery classmate using Spanish adjectives and descriptive phrases. This is a fun way to practice vocabulary, reinforce functional chunks and structures, and encourage interaction among students. This a fun way to turn tried and true favorites into Valentine’s Day activities for Spanish class.
5. ¡Crea tu Propia Tarjeta! (Create Your Own Valentine’s Card):
Get crafty and have students design their own Valentine’s Day cards in Spanish. They can use traditional motifs like hearts and flowers or explore more unique and personalized designs. This activity allows for creativity, cultural expression, and even some friendly competition for the most creative card.
6. ¡Cupido, Vete! (Cupid, Go Away!):
Not everyone is feeling the love on Valentine’s Day. For those students who are less than enthusiastic about this holiday, offer alternative activities that explore different aspects of Spanish-speaking culture. You could discuss famous love stories, explore the history of Valentine’s Day in Spanish-speaking countries, some funny celebrity love stories (or the latest ridiculous teen hearthrob or celebrity couple hullabaloo) or even have a debate about the pros and cons of celebrating this holiday.
7. ¡Celebra la Amistad! (Celebrate Friendship!):
Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be just about romantic love. Encourage your students to celebrate friendship by writing appreciation notes to their classmates, creating collaborative art projects, or even organizing a class party with games and activities that brings on the Galentine’s Day energy.
Bonus Tip: Don’t forget to incorporate technology into your Valentine’s Day activities. Use interactive whiteboards, online games, or even virtual reality experiences to create immersive and engaging learning opportunities.
Remember, the most important thing is to create a fun and inclusive learning environment where all students feel valued and respected, regardless of their relationship status. So, ditch the Cupid, embrace the creativity, and don’t forget the dulces!
