Who's ready for some juicy secrets?
Hi, friends! To those who are new to my feed, welcome!If you’ve been following me here for a while, I’m sure there’s a ton about my life you already know, but I like to take some time every now and again to (re)introduce myself.
This time, I’m going to share 3 things that hardly anyone knows (yes, I still have a few secrets!): 1. I played cello for over 12 years but let it slip to become a parent, start a teaching career, get married, and then start a business to support teachers new to CI with resources, self care, and quality PD on their terms.
I miss it terribly though and am secretly stuffing away money to buy another one. Secrets!
2. I'm a total geek for cartoons. I love art and I love stories, and animation is like a beautiful friendship between both! My favorites are Stephen Universe, Adventure Time, Craig of the Creek, Hilda, Cowboy Bebop, and Bob's Burgers to name a few. I'm secretly learning to draw so that I can make my own characters. Secrets!
3. I truly disliked enforcing rules. It was one of my least favorite parts of being a teacher. But now and again, it was also really fun and rewarding to create rules together as a collaboration with my students. I discovered what I didn't like was DUMB rules.
But lemme tell you, after I let one student slide for being a minute late to 1st block and the immediate uproar from others, I learned my lesson that rules need to be enforced for teenagers to (and really everyone) to be happy.
So even though I didn't like it, it became a priority. Definitely a secret I would never tell until now, but now you know 😉 Secrets!

What's harder -- working hard or making brave decisions?
If I asked you what your top 3 priorities are this week, does your planner reflect that?
Something I noticed when I became part of the "leave work on time club" was that teachers who also left with the buses are not that much different from everyone else in the building.

They are not ultra-fast workers.
They are not any more organized than others.
They don't have much more experience than other teachers (not enough to create a pattern)
They don't have easier classes.
They are not slackers either.
It was such a mystery to me. When a health crisis forced me to figure out how to leave my workaholic ways behind and *shudder* leave when I was supposed to, I asked myself:
What makes them different?
The answer is that teachers who leave on time are ruthless about their priorities.
They politely cut off conversations that leak into their planning time if it means they'll miss a child's band performance.
They'll find a way to eliminate paper from the lesson if the copier is broken instead of staying late to make it work.
They assign classroom jobs instead of cleaning up after kids.
If they have 12 students watching online lessons at home, they don't fuss about the quality of their lesson plans. Their priority is just making it through the day without losing it completely.
They push back when they're assigned more than is humanly possible to do.
Staying late and working till 6:30 every day was hard for me, but it wasn't brave.
Scheduling my priorities was the real hard part. It forced me to be brave and honest with myself every day.

It was also the most freeing thing I ever did for my classroom, my health, and my family.

In teaching, they only ever ask MORE of you. But you're doing MORE THAN ENOUGH. ❤️

High school teachers, this one's for you! In this post, we’ll learn the second language acquisition research and classroom management strategies that will most equip you to teach ages 14-18.
Here are my best suggestions:
1. The Importance of Mutual Respect & Fairness
Respect is earned through mutual positive relationships. Nothing happens until this is established. Period.
3. Acknowledge their Learning Pace
Acknowledging, respecting, and differentiating to their learning pace, especially in questioning techniques, works wonders. In middle school, you need to be more careful about this.
4. Let Pop Culture Influence Your Lesson Planning
Don’t pretend to be an expert on modern culture, let your students guide it! Let students give you ideas for what to do next and participate in lessons, projects, and topic ideas. They LOVE it. Don’t let them set the pace or scope though. Lolz.
6. Build Highly Personalized Curriculums with Time to Talk
Give ample time for non-curriculum discussions. You’re not off-topic, you’re building relationship capital. Asking about marching band competitions, dating snafus, family fights, and all of that is a great segway into awesome stories and relationship building.
7. Respect the shy students.
