Why I Switched to Comprehensible Input

I could tell you all about the research but.....

This year, these are my new REAL reasons for switching to CI:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My student David* who is an AP student in all other classes, and says that he’s learned more in a month than he did ALL last year in language class.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My student Jordan* who says that French is her favorite class–she’ll be the first person in her family to graduate high school.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My student Remi* who has Aspergers Syndrome, but still felt confident enough to do a Special Person Interview for her class.

My babies are my real reasons that I switch, because I’ve seen first-hand how this method empowers students and puts the class and the learning back in their hands.

It’s language for a purpose, to get to know other people and express and understand thoughts about the world around you, that makes teaching for proficiency so powerful.

It keeps my students’ attention a helluva lot better than esoteric grammar ever did.

It’s the power that it gives to ALL students, especially underserved students with difficult home lives, habitual academic self-doubt, and impossibly demanding family structures.

This method of proficiency teaches kids how to use their language to describe their own lives & understand the experiences of native speakers instead of mastering a concept and demonstrating it for a score.

First of all, Black Lives Matter. Second, this movement is going to play out in one of the most important arenas – the classroom. Everyone is in a different place in regards to culturally responsive teaching and equitable practice in world language. It’s time for us to make this the priority. I’m growing with you to become a more equitable teacher – here are some places to start anti-racist teaching and culturally responsive pedagogy in your world language class.

Empowering Black students and all students of color is urgent, necessary work. But there’s a solution that’s been staring us in the face for a while, and it’s time to acknowledge its power to help dismantle harmful practice.

I will share more about this over the next few weeks but one of my first steps was to educate myself first. So I got books, lots of books.

I've ordered and am reading a whole list of books this year to help me become a better anti-racist educator and human. I’ve also amped up my son’s library.

The book Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain is my educator-specific choice. I found the recommendation from @a.c.quintero, an amazing Spanish educator and author of many CI Readers. You can find her books on Amazon as well, but she gets the most from the sale out of her own store.

The other educator book that I recommend to anyone who teaches in an urban environment like me is 'For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood'. It’s my go-to guide for urban pedagogy. I realized last year that I was guilty of the white savior complex he discusses and had to completely change the way I interacted with my students.

Verbs need buddies.

That is to say, they need context. No verbs exist on their own - they live in beautiful thoughts! My students made far fewer errors when I started only showing verbs inside of sentences and I got rid of my conjugation charts. They only learn the rule if they ask to see how it works, or after at least a few days of seeing the conjugations in context.

This is my favorite set of notes and practice for interactive notebooks and context-based grammar.

You’ll love using this set with your French 1s for activity verbs or a review of almost all first-year irregular verbs like fait and va.
